[Gayo Daejun 2012] Part 1: The 10 Best Performances

The performances I chose are some of the most creative, most confident, and best-executed performances -- they're strong from top to bottom and side to side. These are the performances that bring out some of the best talent in K-Pop, and that really do a good job of showing it off.

The 5 Best Albums of 2012

There are albums that come with fireworks and explosions left and right, but at the same time have all the foundations laid out firmly. It's those kinds of albums that made the list this year, but first I had to find them, because believe me when I say that there weren't a lot.

Six rookies to look out for in 2013

The acts on this list fall into one of those two categories -- acts who I think did a phenomenal job this year and deserve to get even bigger, and acts who I think have the potential to do well next year. These are the rookies who proved themselves, whether it be in one area or all, and managed to stand out.

[#1] Infinite - "The Chaser"

Infinite started out with material a cut above the rest of their fellow rookies and now that as permanent fixtures in K-Pop, they carry on with material that's a cut above everyone else. "The Chaser" is everything this list aims to put forward, and everything that I, as a critic, want from a song.

[#2] Ailee (with Simon D) - "Shut Up"

This is what happens when you give a good song to a good singer and do a good job delivering it. This is what happens when people in the industry pull themselves together and do a good job because they genuinely want to. This, my friends, is called magic.

B2ST - Shock Of The New Era

So the album is out. I wasn't expecting it to be out until maybe tomorrow, but it is and I've heard it.

The new B2ST teaser

...is BRILLIANT. Or so I think it'll be.

Last year I crowned them victorious over fellow rookie boyband MBLAQ but my consensus what that they didn't have striking material yet. They had material that sold them and they had decent vocals but nothing out of the ordinary.

Dissecting Kara, DBSK and The Sugababes.

It's been a while, hasn't it? I guess you could call it a lack of inspiration but even if I had the ideas and theories, I couldn't write anything. Now I can - I AM BACK! hahah. Take note that I'm considering doing a review of the Ellie Goulding album, just to remind everyone that I haven't been completely converted to kpop!

So to get me back full-swing, 3 songs from 3 different territories - Korea, Japan and Britain. Go easy on me, OK?

Kara - Lupin/루팡

It's been a few weeks/days since the release of the song, but Lupin still sounds the same - mediocre, boring and nothing special.

Kara's back catalogue is pretty solid proof to me that one, there is no musical growth in Kpop and two, you don't have to be able to sing to be a singer. Stupid, I know.

There is no musical growth in Korea - just change. Growth is taking what you have, who you are, learning from your mistakes and altering who you are to make your material better. Change is like randomly picking a song from a hat. Lupin is serious, it's 'dark' (for kpop) and if their vocals were a gazillion notches higher, it would've sold the concept. What did they used to do? This:
See what I mean? This applies to most kpop artists, even DBSK. Not all, but most.

Lupin is catchy and I like the back beat but the entire song is just bleh, there's nothing about it that makes it stand out from all the other crap that's out these days. Yeah, sure you have this 'thief in the night' concept and to a certain extent it mirrors in the music but I'm not convinced.

3/5

The Sugababes - Wear My Kiss

Oh how I miss writing artists and song titles in straight English. lol.

I hated Get Sexy, About A Girl bored me to death and so I wasn't expecting a lot from Wear My Kiss.

I have one thing to say - it took a kpop addiction for me to appreciate how British pop is really at a different level in terms of production and musicality. The two fields are different and their creativity varies but in terms of being MUSICIANS in the pop industry, I still personally think that Britain is waaaay ahead. Hahah. I haven't lost it yet!

Wear My Kiss is one of those songs I would've loved a year and a half ago and to a certain extent I like the hook. The chorus is solid, the vocals are WAY better than most of the stuff I get in Korea (sorry, but it's true.) and the production is more my taste - rich, but crisp.

4/5

DBSK/TVXQ/Tohoshinki - With All My Heart

Before I start the review, I just have to boast about a few things. First, DBSK's Break Out! became the best-selling single by a foreign artist in Japan, selling over 350,000 copies. As if that wasn't enough, their GH package sold 300,000 copies in A DAY and reached more or less 400,000 copies in a week - making it the best-selling album by a foreign artist, breaking Bon Jovi's 14+-year record.

LSM has left SME. *rejoices*

And last but not the least, I'VE SUCCESSFULLY CONVERTED MEL (http://popdivalc.blogspot.com) TO ALMOST TOTAL DBSK FANGIRL-ISM. *dances around room*

ANYWAY. Let's get on with the review.

The first time I heard this song, I didn't hear the whole thing - all I had was a clip of the last 2 minutes - but that didn't stop me from completely FREAKING THE HELL OUT. I was spazzing all over Twitter, freaking out at anyone with ears, and I fell in love with those 2 minutes.

So then the whole song came out. If I was freaking out over the 2 minutes, I almost died (REALLY CLOSE TO DYING). Those strings, that melody, THOSE VOCALS.

The best part of the song is around 3:42 when Junsu SENDS ME INTO HYSTERICS OVER THOSE VOCALS and the whole song just explodes - string section, screaming and exploding drum lines. Then the song mellows down before just exploding and OH MY GOSH I'M SPAZZING JUST IMAGINING IT.

I might die before I finish this review so obviously it's a 5/5 and just listen to the damn song:

Really..

Nothing to do with music but I honestly wonder why boybands have such an affinity for head-shot album covers.

Exhibit A
Westlife's debut album Westlife

Exhibit B
JLS' debut album JLS

Exhibit C
DBSK's greatest hits album Best Selection 2010

ANYWAY. I just wanna say that my writing/posting around here will be less frequent, for a number of reasons. My life outside the internet is really hectic at the moment and I'm stressed to the max. Then add all the stuff I have going on for me here online - Babelpop, OMGKPOP, The Kpop Nation AND my virgin.com writing position - and we have disaster. Add the fact that the rules and guidelines for the literary award I SO want to win (still) are gonna be out in a few weeks and I have a mental breakdown coming soon - I can feel it.

I won't be taking a hiatus or anything nor will I ever stop posting here, it's just that PRN is the one thing I can do less of and no one will kill me or clobber me - there's no one depending on me besides myself. As if I'd ever let go the one thing that started everything I've ever been able to achieve.

Once again, my posts here will be LESS FREQUENT. They WILL NOT STOP. That also means that once again, the vocal commentary special will be temporarily on hold. TEMPORARILY.

I hope you guys understand that I personally think I've got way too many things going on for me right now and I need to just step back and let everything fall into place.

Oh and PS, the new DBSK track is BRILLIANCE. And we've only got 2 minutes worth. I've spazzed over it on Twitter - that's enough! Listen here.

INTERVIEW: VV Brown

At this point, VV Brown needs no introduction - highly hyped, critically acclaimed, this girl is fantastic. I'll admit that it took some time for her music to sink in to me but now that it has, GAH. Pop but with a hint of non-mainstream-ness - catchy hooks, rich vocals and brilliant arrangements. Like, I'm in heaven.

2NE1 - Try To Copy Me

Even with only 2 singles and one EP out, 2NE1 have been continuously proving that they're a force to be reckoned with - can they sustain it with this new digital single?

4Minute's Manila Showcase

I've written my pieces on OMGKPOP and The Kpop Nation but those were all very news-y - no biases, little comments here and there. But this post is different - none of that journalistic crap. This is what I REALLY thought of the showcase.

BIG BIG things are happening..

Pop Reviews Now is alive because of my love for writing, it's alive because I want to change the pop music industry and shift the focus back to the actual music. Last year was a brilliant year for me, I know I keep on saying it but it's true. Little did I know that this year, bigger things would be happening to me and this tiny little blog.

My year started with PRN being linked to Babelpop and me writing for OMGKPOP. I got hired as a Global Moderator for The Kpop Nation, got promoted to Administrator/News Editor. That's what happened to be in January - PRN, Babelpop, OMGKPOP and The Kpop Nation.

It's February 5 and this morning I got an e-mail that I personally think will turn my whole year around for the best - I'm being offered a writing position at Virgin.com's music section. That's like, THE BIGGEST THING EVER. Like, it's not just some website put up by fans - THIS IS VIRGIN.COM FOR CRAP'S SAKE. That's like writing for DMG or PopJustice only without the stuff that make those blogs them.

OK. I'm still overwhelmed, forgive me if I said something strange. ANYWAY. I took a day to think about it and after talking to 5 people whose opinions MATTER for me, I took the job.

YES, I am now a contributing writer for virgin.com/music/top-music-blogs. My first article should be up sometime this weekend.

Top 20

YES, it's back. Probably bigger and probably better - which songs made the cut this week? Note that this is NOT a continuation of last year's chart thus no NE/RE tags apply. Also, new rule - ONE ENTRY PER ARTIST. Gah. I had too many DBSK entries at one point last year and I'm pretty sure you guys are too sick of them. lol.
