[Gayo Daejun 2012] Part 1: The 10 Best Performances

The performances I chose are some of the most creative, most confident, and best-executed performances -- they're strong from top to bottom and side to side. These are the performances that bring out some of the best talent in K-Pop, and that really do a good job of showing it off.

The 5 Best Albums of 2012

There are albums that come with fireworks and explosions left and right, but at the same time have all the foundations laid out firmly. It's those kinds of albums that made the list this year, but first I had to find them, because believe me when I say that there weren't a lot.

Six rookies to look out for in 2013

The acts on this list fall into one of those two categories -- acts who I think did a phenomenal job this year and deserve to get even bigger, and acts who I think have the potential to do well next year. These are the rookies who proved themselves, whether it be in one area or all, and managed to stand out.

[#1] Infinite - "The Chaser"

Infinite started out with material a cut above the rest of their fellow rookies and now that as permanent fixtures in K-Pop, they carry on with material that's a cut above everyone else. "The Chaser" is everything this list aims to put forward, and everything that I, as a critic, want from a song.

[#2] Ailee (with Simon D) - "Shut Up"

This is what happens when you give a good song to a good singer and do a good job delivering it. This is what happens when people in the industry pull themselves together and do a good job because they genuinely want to. This, my friends, is called magic.

D-NA - 비틀비틀 (Stumble Stumble)

When D-NA started, I opened the possibility of them being the new DBSK - the image, the qualities they were showing us, and even the song were indicators that they could very well be the next biggest thing. So now they're back with a very crucial second single, and of course I have to write something about it.

Kylie - Aphrodite

Yes people, I'm back! I won't babble about what happened to me while I was gone 'coz I don't feel like it and you wouldn't wanna hear it, so I'll just write.

Kylie, Kylie, Kylie. I wasn't blogging about English songs that much when Aphrodite (the single) was literally unleashed, but I clearly remember professing my love for it upon my return. So why not write my first album review in quite a while? Hmmm.

One thing I miss about a lot of Western singles and albums is that I don't have to tell the artists off about such basic things - no more questioning where the melody is and giving lessons in cohesion or even lack of vocal ability, no more kicking and screaming 'coz the production sucks. For seasoned "professionals" like Kylie, these things are natural - my only business is whether the songs themselves are good and if I like them.

*sigh*

I tried not writing for the past few days because it's really been impossible, but I can't sleep, I can't concentrate, and I ended up almost fainting in class a while ago - I can't take this, I'm about to burst out crying right now.

I need to take my mind off things, so here are some random stuff that've been on my mind for the past few days - just so I can relax. Sorry if it's crap and unorganized and short, but I just really need to write.

The DBSK issue is making me go crazy. JaeChunSu just finished their stint at Tokyo Dome and they've got a Lotte ad campaign out in full-force (it's for Korea, mind you). Rumor has it (and it's been partially confirmed by an influential Korean singer/songwriter/producer) that the trio will be working with Kanye West and Timbaland for an "international" album. I heard the Lotte song and even if at the beginning of all this I was like "well they're the 3 lead vocalists anyway", the harmonies are so bare - they lack not only the part that floats (CM), but they lack a strong base (YH). I've always stressed the importance of Yunho and Changmin, even if I don't personally like their vocals, because without them harmonies sound empty, weak and ordinary. Jaejoong, Yoochun and Junsu have some of the best voices in Korea, but DBSK has five members and it's because of all 5 that they're one of the best vocal groups in Asia - no more, no less. I'm excited for the project, I won't deny that, but I have so many fears that I think will come true. I'm scared as hell.

After School's first sub-unit was revealed recently - Orange Caramel. It's got the new girls - Nana, Raina and Lizzy - and I'm worried about them too. Let's face it, Raina may get a lot of solos and she may be better off than some of the other girls in the band, but I don't think she'll be able to carry the band in such a way that the other 2 sound nearly decent. Without JungAh or even Gahee, After School aren't very good singers - well, apart from a bit of Raina here and there.

Another thing I'm really worried about is the fate of D-NA. I saw their teaser the other day, and to say I was outraged would be an understatement. WHY THE EFFIN' CRAP ARE YOU AUTO-TUNING A BAND LIKE THEM? Does their management company want to feel my wrath???? Ughhhh. They don't need auto-tune, they're supposed to be the next DBSK for crap's sake! OK maybe I'm not that sure yet because it's only been a few months since they debuted, but all the signs were there. Emphasis on the were. Of course I could be overreacting - we might suddenly get a non-autotuned song when it actually comes out. Oh well, I'll just wait it out.

*sigh* And back to feeling like crap - it was nice while it lasted.

Announcement. Again.

OK. So my previous "announcement" was supposed to only apply for this weekend. Well, I may have to extend that. My grandmom (yeah, that was the big family emergency) is in pretty bad shape right now, I have school, and my parents are freaking out.

Therefore, I'll have to put my writing on hold for the next few weeks - no posts whatsoever.

I know very (very) well that I need my writing the most at this moment, but I'll have to do without it for the time being - it doesn't matter if I go crazy (which I most probably will), it'll be nothing like what my grandmom's feeling. So yeah.

Once again, I'll see you guys when I see you. Keep leaving comments, I'm checking on them from time to time and I moderated a whole truckload just now.

ANNOUNCEMENT.

As some of you may have noticed yesterday (or read on Twitter)...

I will not be publishing any music show recaps this weekend.

Why? I have very urgent family business to take care of, and I most likely won't be home or in the right state of mind in the evening. Plus the fact that I'm running for honors this year on top of studying for that big exam I was talking about the other day. If you really wanna know what that big family emergency is, check my Twitter account. Otherwise, I'll see you guys when I can.

Infinite - The First Invasion (EP)

It's only been 2 days since I started senior year, but I'm adjusting pretty OK, apart from all the heavy math subjects I have this year. Oh well, life goes on.

I first heard Infinite sometime late least year/early this year - I was already a regular at omgkpop and I remember reading the article on "Tablo's new boyband". That was them. It was a little snippet of a capella, if I remember correctly, and I was interested from that moment on. I had my reservations, but nonetheless I was genuinely curious as to what Tablo would do to them.

I. AM. BACK. Part 2!

Yes - there's a part 2! I wasn't originally gonna write more for a while, but after I published that post last night I realized what I had missed. And of course, since I won't really have the time to write full-length reviews until the weekend, this will have to suffice until the weekend. School starts tomorrow - give me some time to adjust to a new class and new subjects!

Sometimes I think my readers (if I even have any regular ones) have forgotten that I'm first and foremost an English music blogger - I built the foundations of PRN on British and American music, not kpop. Asian music was just an afterthought - when I started blogging about kpop PRN was already established. Ugh but enough of that.

I. AM. BACK.

And by "back" I mean back to posting about non-kpop stuff - I've put this post off for way too long now, and I'm not exactly happy with myself. *sigh* Well, I take this as my big return to blogging about American/British pop? This calls for some confetti, and a lot of comments, don't you think? Just saying.

*sigh* I've been gone for way too long to be able to write about everything, so I went and looked for a lot of newer stuff. I kinda missed this hunting for good music thing, since everything in kpop was just handed to me on a silver platter. All the more reason to rejoice being back then!

The fun starts after the cut, so hurry and click for crap's sake!

[June 5, 2010] MBC Music Core Highlights + Commentary

Oh yes, another recap! Hopefully I complete this weekend's music shows.

I'm a bit surprised by the absence of SISTAR - hmmmm. ANYWAY. The sound today was pretty decent, so you won't read that many complaints about the engineer and whatnot. It's not up to par with the MuBank sound, but it's better than the previous weeks. Yayyy.

YT credit goes to CrazyCarrot250 - amazing. WAHAH.

[June 4, 2010] KBS Music Bank Highlights + Commentary

I'M BAAAAAAAAAAACK! The last weekend of my summer vacation - hopefully I complete recaps for all 3 shows. Fingers crossed.
Today's MuBank didn't have that many idol groups - the Wonder Girls and f(x) were MIA, but SISTAR and SS501 debuted their latest singles. All was good, especially the sound. I would like to personally meet and thank the sound engineer on today's episode, and all the previous episodes. *clap clap clap*

SISTAR - Push Push

I have a few days to spare before school starts, so that means I'll be writing regularly over the weekend! Yay. Please note that I wrote this review in a rather strange way, so I apologize if it sounds a bit choppy at parts. UGH.

Yet another Brave Brothers clone, this time under the talent company founded by the producers themselves, SISTAR are ready to infiltrate kpop. Or are they?

SISTAR is the first "major" girl group to debut in 2010, so there's a lot riding on this - it has the potential to define the trend for new girl groups this year. I'm not saying it will, I'm saying it's possible. Although with the way things are going right now, I doubt it.

Things to come.

I think I've put off writing this way too much - it's time I get serious with my priorities because I don't want to just disappear off the face of the earth without an explanation, I'm not that type of person. So I ask for a moment to explain what's to come.

Initially I wasn't gonna write this post, but May was PRN's busiest month and I gained a lot of loyal readers/comment-ers (commentators? LOL) this month that I think I owe you guys an explanation of what's gonna happen to my life in the next few months that's gonna dictate what I do on PRN and when I do it. Sort of like a synthesis of the first half of my year plus plans for the future.

At the beginning of this year I laid out 10 things I wanted to do for PRN and although some of them got cut short, like me writing for OMGKPOP, I think I did everything I wanted to and a bit more. The one thing I didn't really follow through with though was trying to review more Western pop - I've only had a spattering of reviews since the start of the year compared to the kpop I've been writing about. I try, but UGH.

Moving on.

The end of May isn't actually the end of the first half of the year, but it is for me as it's the end of summer here and the beginning of a new school year I have to crawl through for the next 10 months. This year is a little different from the past years though, which is why I thought of writing this.

I've been saying this for like forever, but in August I take undeniably the biggest test of my life - my future is dependent on how I do on this exam. I'm up against thousands of other high school seniors for a spot in the freshman class of the country's #1 university - this is literally life or death. Add that to the fact that my parents are professors there and me not passing would be shameful. Because of the gravity of this, I've spent weekdays this month in 100 hours of intensive review for it, which has really crippled my blogging time.

But things are just about to get even more manic for me.

My review classes end this Thursday, but I'll only have 4 more free days until I start actual school - I enter senior year on June 8. Though my academic schedule this year will be relatively light compared to the last 3 years, I'll still be reviewing (by myself) for the exam in August - that's on top of my schoolwork, electives and my school's on-the-job-training equivalent.

Right now I'm mainly blogging on Friday nights and weekends - music show recaps, a few reviews and a spattering of "special" posts - I might blog even less once school starts. The music show recaps will continue, and SBS is gonna be aired on cable here so I might even do Inki live tweets in the near future, but I can't guarantee a large amount of reviews, interviews and everything else until after August - by that time the test is over and I would've settled nicely into senior year.

Sometimes I forget that apart from PRN, I'm doing a gazillion other things online. Virgin music and writing, admin-ing and everything else-ing at The Kpop Nation - there are other people expecting things from me on those sites - they'll be my first priorities before PRN and doing those alone will seriously cripple my free time to write for PRN.

Probably the only times I'll be seriously writing, apart from weekends when I do the three music show recaps, is when I think I'm about to go crazy with all the stuff I have to do and need to calm down - in that case, I have to write. If I still think I can take the pressure and the workload, then PRN will remain dormant with the exception of weekends. That and if and when DBSK release a new original single/album, which won't be in the near future.

I always say this but it's true - there is no chance in hell that I'll abandon PRN in the next few years, it means too much to me and it's given me too many opportunities for me to just throw away.

So to my ever-loyal readers (I hope I have a few!) and the new readers I've gained over the span of the last few months, I ask for your consideration and understanding while I sort the rest of my life out - it's been a brilliant first 5 months of 2010 and I've learned so much from all your comments that I hope you keep reading PRN even if posting will be sporadic starting now. Things will get rocky from now on, I won't be posting, moderating comments let alone replying to them and roaming around that much, but I'm sticking by PRN so truly I hope you do too. (whoa that was serious)

I promise to be back in full swing after the exam in August - after all, I have a Philippine Blog Award to win in October!
