Younha - "Just Listen"

After last year's "Supersonic", which was a brilliant album inside out (and my favorite album of 2012!), honestly I was curious to see what Younha would put out next. It wasn't fear like the kind I have for idol groups who do well, but curiosity -- Younha is capable of brilliance and because last year she showed it with such mastery and effortlessness, the question this time around wasn't what she would do, but how she would do it.

The Limits of "pushing the limits"

Whenever pop acts challenge so-called “different” sounds and styles, that foray is usually made under the guise of “pushing the limits” or “thinking outside of the box”. Those concepts have also been used time and time again in debates and arguments on the nature of pop, sometimes incorrectly. Pushing limits does not exempt the work from making sense.

Kim Jaejoong - "I"

I've made it no secret that the mere idea of a Jaejoong solo album/release other than drama OSTs is enough to bring out the (not-so-hidden) fangirl within me, and so when it was finally announced, officially, that Jaejoong's solo album was one, going to be released, and two, a rock-influenced release, as you may have guessed and seen, I flipped. Tears of joy included.

2Yoon - "Harvest Moon"

"Harvest Moon" was the kind of album I first listened to from start to finish, knowing when the songs transitioned from one another, but afterwards I remembered the flow of the entire album just as much as I did the individual tracks. If this is Cube's one good album quota for the year, I'm perfectly okay with that.

SNSD/Girls' Generation - "I Got A Boy"

When I heard that the production team behind "I Got A Boy" was the same one behind "Genie", which is easily my favorite Korean release from SNSD, of course I was excited. I was excited despite the fact that "Dancing Queen" was a disappointment, because "Genie" was both a song, and a sound that I loved for SNSD.

SHINee - Hello (3 new tracks)

When I found out that the new SHINee tracks were out, I was practically tripping over myself trying to scramble home as fast as I could - I even considered skipping fro-yo for them! Let's just say that I didn't skip fro-yo, and I'm glad I didn't.

Miss A - Step Up

I'm far too stressed to explain why I've been MIA for the gazillionth time, so let's skip that entirely and get to the review. I need to relax. It's my birthday tomorrow - I need to relax.

So Miss A are back with a second "single album" (how these terms were thought of is beyond me) and for those who aren't familiar with them, they're JYP's newest girl group under a subsidiary label, AQ Entertainment, and before they debuted they were set to be targeted at China - two members are Chinese - but so far it's only been Korean domination for them. And I mean domination - there was mild controversy surrounding their wins for Bad Girl, Good Girl on various music shows because people just aren't used to new acts winning. Whatever.

A few random "new"-ish songs..

.. or songs I haven't talked about yet but so want to.

I still haven't found/though of a decent title for these posts with a few singles thrown together here and there. Although, in an attempt to make things a little spiffier here (emphasis on the attempt) and fill the archives with more posts now that I'm far too busy to write music show recaps, I'll try and write these more often. If you have any suggestions for a name whatsoever, the comments section is all yours. And I'm in dire need for them.

Here we go again.

I'm in no state, physical or emotional, to start this post decently, so I'll just get straight to the point. Or whatever.

Ever since this whole JYJ in Japan HoMin in Korea thing started, I had a really hard time comprehending everything that was happening. It's hard seeing a group of five fizzle down to two and three - especially if you know, or try to know, what it was like when there were five of them. Now that I'm only starting to fully grasp and possibly even accept the whole concept of this division (even if I've watched the situation since day 1), a new problem comes up. And it's nowhere near "easy to solve".

2NE1 - To Anyone

Let me try and put this nicely. 2NE1 have a very, VERY distinct style - they know who they are, what kind of music they make, and how to make it. Most of the time that's a very good thing, and even I acknowledge that they're more than worthy of their current success, for the simple reason that they have talent AND identity. But I'm sorry, I just don't respond well to the distinct style they have when it's just the song I'm listening to. For the most part.

JYJ (Jaejoong/Yoochun/Junsu) - The...

This is probably one of the most difficult reviews to write, mainly because it hits a sore spot for me, and a lot of others. But I've had enough of going all emo about this, so I'll get straight to the point.

At the beginning of this whole JYJ in Japan, HoMin in Korea thing, I said that "oh it doesn't matter, JYJ are the voices of the band anyway - they'll sound fantastic," but hearing this mini album makes me wanna take that back. Actually, even when they started those dome concerts I observed that - the album just reinforced it in my mind.

Brave Brothers - Volume 1: The Classic

Ohmyohmyohmyohmy, how long as it been since my last post? Well, it doesn't matter - I'm back, and I won't be going anywhere for the next few weeks. Except maybe around the time I deliver my senior speech (ABOUT HALLYU!!!) and take the second and last university entrance exam I'm taking. That and I lost my earphones yesterday so I'm relying on my phone for all blogging listening I have to do, and the battery life of my phone is not the best in the world. But anyway, I'M BACK WITH AN ALBUM REVIEW!

The Brave Brothers. Whether you're new to kpop or a veteran in the field, you've heard their songs. You may not know which songs they were responsible for, but I think it's a given that they produce majority of the non-"big 3" acts, and even a few big 3 acts here and there. They (some sources lead me to believe that it's just one guy, but whatever) used to work under YGE, but left to start independently producing. It's pretty much paid off, as they've worked with/for artists like After School, San Dambi, U-Kiss, 4Minute, BEAST, Brown Eyed Girls, and the list goes on.
