[Gayo Daejun 2012] Part 1: The 10 Best Performances

The performances I chose are some of the most creative, most confident, and best-executed performances -- they're strong from top to bottom and side to side. These are the performances that bring out some of the best talent in K-Pop, and that really do a good job of showing it off.

The 5 Best Albums of 2012

There are albums that come with fireworks and explosions left and right, but at the same time have all the foundations laid out firmly. It's those kinds of albums that made the list this year, but first I had to find them, because believe me when I say that there weren't a lot.

Six rookies to look out for in 2013

The acts on this list fall into one of those two categories -- acts who I think did a phenomenal job this year and deserve to get even bigger, and acts who I think have the potential to do well next year. These are the rookies who proved themselves, whether it be in one area or all, and managed to stand out.

[#1] Infinite - "The Chaser"

Infinite started out with material a cut above the rest of their fellow rookies and now that as permanent fixtures in K-Pop, they carry on with material that's a cut above everyone else. "The Chaser" is everything this list aims to put forward, and everything that I, as a critic, want from a song.

[#2] Ailee (with Simon D) - "Shut Up"

This is what happens when you give a good song to a good singer and do a good job delivering it. This is what happens when people in the industry pull themselves together and do a good job because they genuinely want to. This, my friends, is called magic.

Great things can happen when the industry forces an idol group with a limited budget to stand out.

So much money, time and effort goes into idol group release these days - flashy music videos, heavily produced and processed singles, and whatever else money can buy - but at the end of the day, all that really matters is how the group delivers all that flash. There are some who can pull it off, but many (and I mean MANY) fall short - the endless gimmicks have become a way to hide the fact that majority of groups these days have next to no solid musical talent.

Cue DGNA/The Boss.

I guess it's time for explanations.. yet again.

Even if it hasn't been that long since my last review, I know that I haven't been paying too much attention to PRN, and in all honesty that's killing me, but other things are killing me as well, and commitments are commitments. I'll wrap up my first semester of college on Monday afternoon, when I take the last of my exams, and then I'll be home free. To focus on PRN? Hopefully.

I'll spare you the long story, but in all honesty, I'm so drained from school and work that when I finally get some free time for myself, the last thing I want to do is think. It has caused me to seriously reconsider my job over at soompi, but I just started slowly climbing the ladder. Hopefully by the end of the year I'll be in a position of that much more power.

I think it's also important for you guys to know that I'm not just a contributor for Soompi anymore - I'm a columnist. Which means every week I have to write a single review, and that's both a blessing and a curse for PRN. It's a curse because obviously, my attention will go to the Soompi single reviews over my reviews here in PRN, but it's also a blessing because once I get the hang of this weekly thing, it will hopefully get me back to writing reviews regularly.

And lastly, if you really want to read my reviews (I doubt you will though. hahah!), here's where:

SOOMPI - I have a weekly column, and all articles that are titled "Single Review: Artist - 'Title'", are mind. I only do SINGLE reviews, not album reviews. I also write hard news, mainly about JYJ/HoMin, under the username writer_girl.
The Kpop Panel - Mel, McRoth and I are trying to make this a weekly thing again, so I'm putting more effort into this. I've linked to The Kpop Panel before on my music show recaps, so I think majority of you guys know the drill.

I don't know when I'll be writing regularly again, but like I always say, I can assure you that no matter how busy I get, no matter how long I don't write reviews for PRN, there is no way in heaven or hell that I will let PRN go. Pop Reviews Now started it all for me, I've built a career and a name for the past three years because of PRN, so frankly, I'd be crazy to let it go.

JYJ - "IN HEAVEN"

Initially I was against the idea of reviewing "In Heaven", mainly because I thought that if I did it would just turn into a screaming, gushing, freaking out-fest. Let's just say that a lot of things happened between the release and now that writing a review is probably the best thing to do now. That said, it's also a good thing I didn't review "Their Rooms" earlier this year, because if I did you'd be left with half a review and the same opinions for the other half.
