I'll admit that I hesitated a bit on whether or not to include this on the list, but then I figured, this is my list, and these are the songs I liked this year, so I don't think it would be right to exclude this.
"Like Money" was first played in the Wonder Girls movie earlier this year, and it was the one good thing to come out of that movie, even if they only played a third of it. I loved it the first time I heard it, and I still love it now. Probably not as much as others on this list, but I love it nevertheless.
What I like about it, or at least what I haven't already talked about in my review earlier this year, is that it's actually a perky song, but it's a light kind of perky if you listen to it casually. It's something to bop your head to, not something to head bang to. That's partially because of how the track was mixed -- if you noticed, the instrumental sounds limp in comparison to the vocals, or, the vocals pop more than the instrumental.
The melody is simple and hardly varies, sometimes even the melodies of the verses and the chorus sound similar, but even then they sound very catchy. Even if some lines are strung together, the actual lines are very short too, making it even catchier. This is why the melody can carry the song, because it's very pop. Look me in the eye and tell me you don't remember at least one or two lines after listening to it in its entirety. But I also think that the melody itself is really gorgeous -- it repeats a lot, but if you're not annoyed yet, it's pretty. Putting aside the fact that Sohee got so much (and gets to much in general), note also that Ye Eun and Sun Ye, the strongest vocals in the band, get the parts that matter the most, and the parts that people will remember.
But I guess what really makes this song for me is that it's confident. I mean it does have it's flaws, and Akon sometimes annoys me, but it's not afraid of that, because it is what it is, and it does have it's moments of glory.
I liked the clip from the movie but after seeing the MV, I wasn't too impressed but I grew to like it due to learning the dance for their September contest. Sad that I only came out 12th at the end of it!
ReplyDeleteBy the way, great review as always Nicole!
